Third Annual Sewanee MLK Day of Service
The third annual Sewanee MLK Day of Service will be on Monday, Jan. 20. On behalf of the Office of Civic Engagement, the Office of Inclusive Excellence, and All Saints’ Chapel, we invite students, faculty, staff, family, and community members to join us as we serve the local community while building community with one another.
On Jan. 20, we will gather in Fowler for a day full of service, learning, community building, and fun. Due to the incredibly positive participation over the past two years, we are now offering two different volunteer shifts to accommodate more volunteers. You can register for the 9 a.m. to noon shift, the 1–4 p.m. shift, or both. Everyone (both shifts of volunteers) will gather together at noon for an informal lunch and brief remarks to remember and honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
We will again work in partnership with Sleep in Heavenly Peace to build beds for children in our community who otherwise would not have a bed to sleep in. While this is a national organization, all the beds we build together will stay in our local community. We are excited to offer card-making and blanket-making service projects for the second year for those who prefer not to build beds. We can’t think of a better way to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. than to come together in service and unity.
This year, we are also excited to offer a kids’ room in Fowler just for the young ones in our community. Our AmeriCorps service members will offer games, arts and crafts, service projects, and more for the little ones, so please feel free to bring the kids
The deadline to sign up to volunteer is Wednesday, Jan. 15. Register here <https://docs.google.com/forms/...;.
To culminate the Day of Service, All Saints’ Chapel and the School of Theology will offer a time of prayer, reflection, and music honoring the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at 5 p.m., Jan. 20, in All Saints’ Chapel.
