University Chancellor to Read from New Book
At 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16, the School of Theology will host the chancellor of the University of the South, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Jacob Owensby, for a reading from his newly released book, “A Full-Hearted Life: Following Jesus in This Secular Age.” The reading will be in the newly renovated Hamilton Hall (located at 335 Tennessee Ave., in Sewanee) and livestreamed for those who cannot attend in person. Visit <theology.sewanee.edu> to register for the livestream event. Please join us. All are welcome and encouraged to attend.
In his latest book, Owensby examines life’s big questions. “Even people who reject any hint of the supernatural and insist that nothing exists apart from matter will have to find meaning for themselves in our secular age—an era marked not by the absence of belief, but rather the effect on our consciousness of the sheer number of competing belief systems,” says Owensby. In his book, Owensby articulates how believing in Jesus gives us a sense of who we are, why we’re here, what the good life is, and how to move toward that good life.
Bishop Owensby is chancellor of the University of the South, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Western Louisiana, and author of seven books. Bishop Owensby also writes a regular newsletter titled The Woodlands.
Before entering ordained ministry, Bishop Owensby earned a Ph.D. at Emory University and was an associate professor of philosophy at Jacksonville University. He taught the history of philosophy and wrote about human consciousness and theories of meaning and understanding.
