Sewanee Ensembles Sing and Play During the Holidays

University of the South music ensembles will present a variety of concerts as the semester closes and the holidays approach. All performances are free and open to the public.
The Folk Music Collective, directed by James Carlson, visiting professor of music, will present a concert at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 14, in St. Luke’s Chapel. The group will perform Irish, Czech, Klezmer, and French folk music.
Three Sewanee a cappella groups will join forces to present a concert at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 14, in Guerry Auditorium. The 18-member group Cambiata will perform an eclectic program including “Run to You” by Pentatonix and “This Christmas” by Donny Hathaway. Cadence, a women’s ensemble of 20, will perform a variety of selections including “The Way I Am” by Ingrid Michaelson, and “One and Only” by Adele. Key of D, the nine-member men’s group formed four years ago, will also perform on the program.
At 7:30 p.m., today (Friday), Dec. 9, the Sewanee Symphony Orchestra (SSO) will perform a winter concert, Feelin’ Festive, in Guerry Auditorium with Artistic Director César Leal conducting. The Sewanee Chorale, under the direction of Ruth Cobb, will join the orchestra in the performance of John Rutter’s arrangements of “O Holy Night” and “We wish you a Merry Christmas.” Jessica Usherwood, visiting assistant professor of voice, is guest soloist. Movements from two Handel oratorios will also be performed, “And the Glory of the Lord” from Messiah, and “Hallelujah, Amen” from Judas Maccabeus. Willcock’s well-known arrangement of “O Come all ye Faithful” will include audience participation. The program will also include orchestral selections “Around the World at Christmas Time” by Chase, “Festive Songs of Hanukah” by Holcombe, and “A Christmas Festival” by Anderson.
