Mural Project at Taylor’s Mercantile
The University of the South is the recipient of a $25,000 grant for Tennessee America 250 initiatives from the Tennessee Commission for the United States Semiquincentennial. This grant will fund a vibrant new mural in the Sewanee Village, and was secured through a joint effort between the Office of Economic Development and the University Relations team. The project will feature artwork by muralist Megan Lingerfelt, who was selected by a committee of local stakeholders including community members, a student art major, a faculty member, Village business owners, members of the Sewanee Business Alliance, Sewanee Civic Association, and Do. More. Art., a public art nonprofit organization.
This initiative is also an important placemaking endeavor that is building on efforts to make the Village an even more welcoming destination and experience for those who live in and visit Sewanee. Weather permitting, Lingerfelt will paint the piece between Oct. 13 and Oct. 28 on the southern wall of Taylor's Mercantile, facing Highway 41A. The design celebrates Shakerag Hollow and its recently discovered species of wildflower, Phacelia sewaneensis, using a color palette of greens, browns, and purple. Be sure to visit the Village during October to watch Sewanee’s new mural come to life.
