Register for the Third Annual Hunger Walk
Thursday, August 17, 2017
Did you know that in 2014 it was estimated that in Franklin County 13.3 percent of the population (5,480 people) were suffering from food insecurity or did not have access to adequate nutritious food; in Marion County this is estimated at 14.6 percent (4,110 people); while in Grundy County the percentage increases to 17.8 percent (2,460 people)? Together in the tri-county area there are more than 12,000 people who do not have access to adequate nutritious food. This problem does not only affect our area—14.3 percent of families nationwide struggle with food insecurity.
There are numerous organizations dedicated to addressing the problem of food insecurity in the community, including Morton Memorial Church and the Community Action Committee. Through a joint effort in the third annual Hunger Walk, the Monteagle Sewanee Rotary hopes to raise awareness about these hunger issues as well as raise money to help end them.
To best way to support The Hunger Walk is to be a community partner through sponsorships. By donating $250, businesses and individuals can become a partner and have their logo/name featured on Hunger Walk posters and participant T-shirts.
Another way to help out is to walk showing your support. Registration is free for children under 12, $10 for students and $20 for adults. Register to walk at www.thehungerwalk.com.
Registration may also be completed on the day of the walk, Saturday, Sept. 2, at Angel Park in Sewanee. Registration begins at 8 a.m. with the walk starting at 9 a.m. Each walker will receive a T-shirt and a “Hunger is not a Game” sticker.
After the walkers complete the 5-mile course from Angel Park to Pearls and back, they will be treated to refreshments at Angel Park.
