The mission of the Sewanee Mountain Messenger is
- to produce an economically viable weekly newspaper and accompanying website that support the greater Sewanee community by providing news and information that affect residents’ lives,
- to serve as a newspaper of record for the area, and
- to encourage meaningful community engagement.

The Sewanee Mountain Messenger is a free local newspaper, available for pickup in 96 Plateau locations, from Cowan to Beersheba Springs. It was founded in 1985 by the request of the University of the South, the Sewanee Civic Association and the Sewanee Woman’s Club. The Sewanee Mountain Messenger is supported through paid advertisements, contributions by the University of the South for printing costs and contributions from the Sewanee Community Chest.
