Morton Memorial United Methodist Church will host a Groundbreaking for “The Well,” the extension of their continuing Food Mission, at 10 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 29. The ceremony and new facility will be located behind the church building on Church Street.

At one time, the property where the new building will be built had wells that provided the Marion County side of Monteagle with water. According to Rev. Melisa Derseweh, minister for Morton Memorial, “The name ‘The Well,’ reflects both our faith and history. As we draw from the well of living water, we faithfully serve neighbors who need not only food, but also a sense of being welcomed and loved. With the new facility, our food mission continues providing the surrounding communities with both physical and spiritual sustenance.”

“For many years, Morton Memorial’s Food Mission has faithfully served our neighbors by providing food, compassion, dignity, and hope. From its beginnings by a few volunteers helping a few families each week, the distribution has grown to serving more than 200 families monthly. On the second Saturday of each month, more than 10,000 pounds of food are distributed to our neighbors from five or more counties who are facing food insecurity. The next step for the food mission is to build its own building, which will provide the space for a new iteration of service,” Rev. Derseweh said.

The public is welcome to attend the ceremony. Morton Memorial is located at 322 West Main St., in Monteagle. In case of rain, the ceremony will be in the church’s Fellowship Center.
